Zion National Park Utah Hiking & Peakbagging
Date Climbed: 04/23/06
After bagging its nearby neighbor The Watchman Peak and failing on our 1st attempt due to thinking Johnson looked much easier than Watchman & leaving all of our climbing gear in the wash that separates the two peaks, we decided to give it another try since all of the numerous options we tried turned into exposed 5th class, aka: (the wrong way) w/ mandatory rappels to descend. One of our party was apparently feeling a bit overly confident and decided it was possible to scramble on up and was stuck out on a little horn while I rigged up an anchor to safely get him back to terra firma. The Johnson route starts up from the valley and ascends a nice chute that is also used to climb The Watchman and comes up from the West side of the mountain. Once to ridge you follow cairns and GPS tracks / map to the wash and head South approximately 20 minutes and Johnson will be the peak to your Right as you look at mountain. The 4th class route (descent I found to avoid rappelling and to see if there is an easier alternative) seen on GPS tracks and cairned fairly well near crux. No signs of past parties and no information from Zion regulars, or Zion Visitors Center Black Book. A scenic and fun hike with some of the best views in Zion awaits you on the Johnson. *This hike is located outside of the pay area before you enter the park.
*GPS Map and Tracks can be downloaded from above images.
Our route had a small amount of 5th Class - Use GPS Map & Tracks at your own risk - As always, come prepared & be careful of loose rock
