Red Rock Canyon Hiking Las Vegas, Nevada
A Las Vegas Mountaineers Club group outing (LVMC 50 classic peaks list) hike in Red Rocks where in high clearance vehicles we went a couple of miles up Rocky Gap Road (dirt rd. at end of Willow Springs), parked at trail head and ascended the steep and scenic North Wash then over to Bridge Mountain (elevation 7005'). There also is a well established hiking trail to the east of North Wash that is much easier if you would choose to go a different way. Also yet an even easier way exists near the top of Rocky Gap Road or Red Rock Summit at 36o7.85'N 115o32.00'W and makes Bridge Mountain quite easy due to less elevation gain (4wd required) and also accessed from Lovell Canyon. A couple of us got to ridge above North Wash before the others and hiked the short distance Northeast over to bag North Peak (7056' & second highest peak in Redrocks). Bridge Arch is a beautiful formation and much easier than it appears to be and one of the most popular hikes in Red Rock Canyon. There are numerous large pools of water "tinaja" and likely the beginnings of future natural arches along the way and expansive vistas to nourish the senses. On the way back I left group descended Fern Canyon of Pine Creek (North Fork) solo since my partner wasn't feeling well, and hitched a ride while jogging down the Scenic Loop rd. with a nice climbing couple visiting from NC and was back to the car a couple of hours before the group got back. This is a really nice traverse and having done it several times find it quite easy to get a ride back to avoid the inconvenience of a car shuttle. Quite often Bighorn Sheep are seen on this hike among other desert inhabitants. A large bird of prey (eagle?) sat atop Piute Wall as we enjoyed the views from Pine Creek Overlook. Thanks again Chris for organizing this LVMC hike. A detailed Map and GPS tracks are available through images below.
Hike Date: 04/21/06 - Distance: 8 miles + - Elevation: 6,471 - Elevation Gain: 3000 ft
